The Next Chapter of My Life (Student's Article)

Sushmita Mae Rose Contreras

My life is always full of new lessons, new discoveries, and new knowledge about it. I guess life is truly full or surprises. You’ll never know when another chapter of your life is going to be revealed.

For me, there are some things in life that we need to learn by ourselves. Sometimes, wisdom is something you gain through your own efforts. Like for example, acquiring knowledge based from your own experiences. Anyway, experience is and will always be, the best teacher, only if you can apply what you’ve learned.

I strongly believe that every person has already experienced a life-changing moment in his life, even just for once. It is when one small thing caused a huge impact in your life. Afterwards, you’ll have this sudden feeling of enlightenment, like a bright light struck you and carried away your entire burden.

Now, I’m facing a new chapter in my life and the feeling is overwhelming. After all those challenges I’ve gone through, another beginning is to start. Mixed emotions take over me—excitement, joy, curiosity, and fear.

I feel like I’ve overcome the biggest threat and largest problem that ever existed in this world. It’s like being able to carry the cross with ease, without feeling even a single pain. I don’t know why, but I suddenly felt like God took away the entire burden within me.

Maybe it’s about time for me to impart that wisdom to the people around me. And I also want to share to others what I’ve learned in the past challenges which changed my life completely. Overcoming my fears and self-doubts made the process much difficult but without them, that trial won’t be as tough as it was—which only made me stronger. Every undertaking was all worth it.

Day by day, I learn to understand my purpose in this world. Through those undertakings and problems, I managed to overcome my fears and realized the true meaning of life. Yes, every beginning has its own end, but every ending corresponds to another beginning, another chapter. Another chapter of my life has ended and I’m all set to take the next.

The Icon of Peace

Disclaimer: Image not owned.

At 76, she bid her final farewell…

I first saw her face on a news magazine, Reporter, embossed on the front page showing a peace sign amidst countless people. I was seven and I barely comprehend what Martial Law or democracy signifies but peace I understood…thanks to her.

Launching into description of her would be like committing a grave sin of injustice. Nothing would suffice really. Her story was like a fairy tale- only that she didn’t have a happy ending with her husband who was cruelly assassinated.

However, it was full enough of colourful trappings to amount it to a movie story- born in an influential clan, married the man of her dreams, served as a plain housewife for many years, lost her husband in the most painful way,  catapulted into presidency without preparation, and braved the odds to defend her youngest daughter in many controversies and finally, succumbed into colon cancer.

She wowed the whole world with her silent forbearance. She’s a mother, a writer, a painter…an advocate of peace. The right one needed after the whole country suffered under the hands of tyranny.

Farewell to Cory Aquino. Her legacy was written in the heart of every Filipino- the legacy of PEACE.

She wowed the whole world with her silent forbearance. She’s a mother, a writer, a painter…an advocate of peace. The right one needed after the whole country suffered under the hands of tyranny.

Tapestry of Unequivocal Adversity

-endless piles of works which seem to add up every time I accomplish something…

-Sacrificing personal aspects of my life…

-Enduring the weakening resistance of my body…

-Heightening pressure to prove something in the class…

-Giving up the luxury of Sunday relaxations…

Ahhh…the noxious life of Doctor of Jurisprudence!!!

Now, Saturday vigil for next meeting’s quiz!

Toxic Joy- The Journey to the Doctor of Jurisprudence

Two weeks seemed to just pass at a glance. Doctor of Jurisprudence started and another leaf of my life is being unfolded.

Case digest- 26 in a week!
Hundred of pages to be studied…
Endless assignments…
Nerve- wracking recitations…
Long hours of travel…

Three gruelling hours in a room full of cerebral people listening to highfalutin words (interim, Dura Sed Lex, Ignorancia Legis Neminem Excusat, Stare Decisis, and others)…

…and guilty feeling after not conforming to somebody’s opinions.

TOUGH.

However, there is also joy.

Joy that finally I’m into the world I’ve always dreamed to be…

Joy that I’m in the process of widening my horizon…

Joy of having a chance to know people who came from different worlds…

Joy whenever studying hard pays off…

Indeed, a toxic joy. I have fallen for it head over heels. Will I make it?

Thirty Real-Life Lessons on My 30th Birthday

Thirty years…

Thirty years
of living a life…
of loving with my heart…
of feeling with my soul…

Thirty real-life lessons…

1. Love has no expiration date. It’s ever present. It’s stronger each day. It’s a beautiful feeling.

2. Some people are lucky to experience two different worlds. One of the world of sincerity and the other of mendaciousness, deceit and insecurities. I’ve experienced both- Yes, bitter- sweet it is.

3. Some people are enemies pretending to be friends but majority are friends- real ones if you know how to pick.

4. You would just wake up one morning, full of zeal to chase your ultimate dream. June 15 is coming; Doctor of Jurisprudence is soon to begin. And if you fail, it is okay what matters is you tried.

5. It is great to be a teacher but it’s greater if you will not stop learning.

6. At the lowest point of your life, the time where you think there’s no more tomorrow, family and real friends will always be there for you.

7. There is no such thing as best friends but real friends.

8. If you have planted only good seeds, you wouldn’t be afraid to face your future.

9. Birthdays are not date but reminders that we must cherish each day for it will never come back again.

10. Never be afraid to trust and love. If at the end you get hurt, the beautiful feeling that embraced you is worth the pain.

11. I’d rather be the one to get hurt that be the one to cause hurt. I sleep deeply that way.

12. Losing a family creates a vacuum in your heart- one that could never be filled.

13. Dream man is not “dreamed” at all nor is he planned. He would just come to your life one day and will make you realize, he is everything you want and more.

14. Future is not in our hands but we are responsible to work with what we want to happen in the future.

15. You don’t need your own kids to give motherly love, there are always kids out there waiting for your love.

16. You need to be careful of those who use Religion to create their image. It’s not what it seems to be.

17. Help is not being asked. You’ll receive it if you deserve it.

18. You don’t need to pretend to be somebody so others would love you. Being the real you would be more appreciate and loved.

19. Sincerity can not be dictated but you can start with yourself so others would be ashamed to be insincere with you.

20. It is true, you learn the lesson in a hard way but you can always lessen the burden if you’ll always do the right thing.

21. There would always be people who will put you down but just what the old adage says, “You can not put a good man down.”

22. Life is a journey. You meet people. You love them. You leave them. Then you start with new ones. However, those you love will always be in your life.

23. Sisters will always be the best. In all your failures, in all your successes, they’ll be your spectators to help you when you fall and cheer you up when you emerge victors.

24. My greatest accomplishment is not the publication of the Diamond Jubilee coffee table magazine, or the countless awards given, but being able to stand when my whole world crumbled.

25. You don’t expect anything in life. If you do, you’re opening your life to painful disappointments.

26. You don’t do things because others said it. You are the master of your life.

27. Sometimes, the realization that you’re in constant competition in life will just hit you. It’s futile. It’s a waste of time.

28. The world may not be the best place to live but life is what we make it. Either sulk or rejoice. Your choice…

29. Many people with concealed motives are out there to manipulate us. Don’t throw caution. Be wise. Wake up.

30. Fairy tale does come true. My prince swept me off my feet.
A dream is a wish your heart makes…

The world may not be the best place to live but life is what we make it. Either sulk or rejoice. Your choice…
